Shape-Shifting Homes and Other Bright Ideas Illuminate Earls Court

Such an amazing amount of inspirational ideas at this year’s 100% Design show. As well as Yo!Home, I was particularly impressed by all things lighting.

Lighting has always been used to maximum effect at 100% Design and this year’s show doesn’t disappoint. As soon as I entered,  the Collider lighting mobile greeted me, hovering above my head in the entrance foyer.  The Collider is a collaboration between artists Neil Musson and Jono Retallick using LED lightsheet manufactured by Applelec.

Next, I was directed down a black tunnel, illuminated by dramatic changing light sequences which lead me into the central bar area from which each section can be accessed.

Proving that Italian design should not be ignored, Prantil Camillo have a sumptuous bedroom setting complete with sunken Spa bath. A subtle ornate metal screen at the corner of the bed is there, presumably, to prevent the sleeper inadvertently slipping into the bath and drowning! I seem to have captured myself in the back mirror!

If you have the patience to queue a while, do go and see Simon Woodroffe,  the brains behind YO! Sushi and Yotel, demonstrate his latest prototype  YO! Home. A very spacious feeling home in just 84 sq metres!

The bed rises to be stored in the ceiling revealing a sunken lounge area beneath.

There’s even a guest room which converts from an office, hidden storage and dining area.

All in all YO! Home is an extremely ingenius idea. It creates a versatile  living space where areas are changed by means  of counter balanced wieghts moving walls and floors. My only concern would be to go easy on the alcohol when the sunken areas are in use to avoid accidents! YO Home has loads more surprising features so you really should go and see it for yourself!

Today’s the penultimate day of the show so you’d better get your skates on!
